Why Rim Rehab For Mag Repairs

"Mag wheels" started as a term for magnesium racing wheels — today it's what most Australians call any alloy wheel, from a factory set to aftermarket classics. Whatever's on your car, the repair discipline is the same: assess the damage honestly, machine and weld what can be saved, and refinish to a factory-grade standard. We repair kerb-rashed mags, straighten buckled ones, weld cracked ones, and full-restore classic sets that deserve a second life — all in-house at Southport, never outsourced.

Common Questions

FAQ

Are mag wheels and alloy wheels the same thing?

In everyday Australian use, yes — “mags” is the common name for alloy wheels. True magnesium wheels are rare outside motorsport. Either way, we repair them: aluminium alloys in-house daily, and we'll assess genuine magnesium wheels case by case.

Can old or classic mag wheels be restored?

Usually, yes — classic mags are one of our favourite jobs. Full restoration covers stripping, welding, straightening, machining and a fresh factory-grade finish. Restoration starts from $249 per wheel.

Can you change the colour of my mags?

Yes. A full refinish is the right time to go from silver to gunmetal, satin black, or a custom colour — the whole face is stripped and recoated either way, so a colour change costs nothing extra.

How much does mag wheel repair cost?

Kerb damage from $99 per wheel, straightening from $99, full refinish from $149, and full restoration from $249. Send photos for an exact price — quotes are free and same-day.

Do I need to take the tyres off first?

No — our tyre partner, Southport Budget Tyres & Auto, handles removal and refitting if the repair needs it.
